Harmen Janse Knickerbocker, B16551,2,3,4,5,6,6,6,6,7,6

M, #7206, b. about 1655, d. 1714

Family: Lysbet Janse Bogaert (b. about 1659, d. about 1728)

Burial of Harmen Janse Knickerbocker
When Cornelius Knickerbocker sold his inheritance, the deed included mentions that (a) his father Harmen Janse had died nearby, and (b) that Harmen Janse was buried in a small burying ground that was excluded from the sale.

Biography

  • Harmen Janse Knickerbocker, B1655, was born about 1655.1,5
  • He and Lysbet Janse Bogaert were married about 1678 in Albany, Albany, NY.
  • He died in 1714 in Tivoli, Dutchess, NY.8,4,5
  • He was buried in 1714 in Tivoli, Dutchess, NY.5
  • Harman Janse was the first person ever called "Kenickerbacker.” This eventually morphed to “Knickerbacker.” These are not ancient names. They had never existed before.
  • 1655: There is a popular myth that our ancestor was “Van Bergan.” This is total garbage. There was never a person called “Jan Van Bergan Knickerbocker.”
  • 1655: Harmen Janse is discussed in many reports on knic.com. See, for example, "The Many Names of Harmen Janse Knickerbocker." See also the Van Alstyne history from NYGBR (available as a PDF on knic.com).
  • Knic Generation #: 1.
  • 1682: Deacon's accounts show that Harmen Van Bommel rented a small pall on May 7 1682. (See Dutch Church's Deacon Accounts, as reprinted in Munsell, Collections, volume 1.) A "pall" is the fancy covering for a casket, used during a funeral.
  • : 6 May 1684. Day 1 of the court case between Harmen Janse “Kinnekerbacker” and Mews Hogoboom. The case involved a dead cow. The incident had happened 5 years earlier.9
  • : 6 Jun 1684. Day 2 of the court case between Harmen Janse and Mews Hogoboom, involving a dead cow. This time our ancestor called himself “Van Bommel.” This proves the connection between the Knickerbockers and Bommel.9
  • When son Lawrence was baptized, Harmen Janse was again called “Van Bommel.” See the church record. Baptism was witnessed by Anthony Van Schaick.6
  • 1698: Benjamin Vosburg’s mother was a Quakenbush. Harmen Janse was an early neighbor of the Quakenbush family. Harmen Janse “Van Bommel” and his wife Lysbeth Boegart were the sponsors at Benjamin’s baptism.
  • Harmen Janse Knickerbocker, B1655, lived in ..., Dutchess, NY, in 1704.8
  • 1708: His will (in Dutch) was signed in 1708. He described himself as “Harmen Janse Knickerbacker Van Dutchess County.” (In this case “Van” indicated where he currently lived.)
  • He lived in ..., Dutchess, NY, in 1710.1
  • He lived in ..., Dutchess, NY, in 1714.2
  • 1714: Date of Harmen's death is from court records. (Peter Knickerbocker testified in a 1784 lawsuit related to the boundaries of his father's property. See Law Records of Alexander Hamilton, Volume 3.)
  • He had his estate probated about 1715 in ..., Dutchess, NY.4
  • In 1718, Dutchess County imposed a property tax. The largest assessment was on the widow of Harmen Janse Knickerbocker. This is proof that Harmen Janse Knickerbocker died before 1718.
  • 1908: Person [1] in Van Alstyne's numbering system. NYGBR, 1908/1909.
