Biography

  • Jeremiah Knickerbocker, B1776, was born on 1 April 1776 in CT.
  • He died on 1 April 1826 at age 50 in Jefferson, Schoharie, NY.4
  • He was buried in Mannsville, Jefferson, NY.4
  • Knic Lineage: 1. HJ / 2. Lourens / 3. John / 4. Isaac / 5. Jeremiah (this person.)
  • Knic Generation #: 5.
  • 1800: Already married in 1800. Thanks to the tombstone picture on Findagrave, we know that Anna was too young to be the 1800 wife. Thus, there was a 1st wife, before Anna.
  • Jeremiah Knickerbocker, B1776, lived in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT, in 1800. "Jara" Knickerbocker in Salisbury. See Familysearch. (Ancestry missed the real 1st page of Salisbury. See the filmstrip, and go to the last page of Roxbury, preceding Salisbury.) 1M & 1F, both under 26.3
  • He lived in Hamilton, Madison, NY, in 1802. Jeremiah paved the way for John and Lydia in what later became Eaton, Madison County. (Chenango split in '06. Hamilton split and Eaton formed in '07.) Stay was brief? Not there in '01. Shows up in '02 and '03. (Later lists are not online.)1
  • 1804 in Eaton, Madison, NY: Read the will of John Knick (d 1785 in Salisbury). 25 acres left to "Harmon's John" was adjacent to a spring & Isaac's house. Jeremiah and Harmon's John must have known each other. In 1804, they were near each other again. Will never know full story.
  • 1805: When Jeremiah and Mary sold land in Hamilton, Solomon Bebee was listed as co-owner. (Chenango, H, 201.) Who was he? Why was Solomon's wife not mentioned? https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99WF-9H5J?i=439&cc=2078654&cat=241548
  • 1805 in Hamilton, Madison, NY: Jeremiah and wife Mary sell property in Hamilton. (At that time, Hamilton was in Chenango County. Madison County formed in 1806.) Chenango Co H pg 201. Part of 2nd township, lot 70. (About 1 mile from John Knickerbocker in Eaton?)
  • 1805: See history of Sandy Creek. A "Mr Knickerbocker" settled in about 1805, 3 miles northeast of Lacona. His wife died soon thereafter. (75 miles from Hamilton NY to Lacona NY.)
  • He lived in Ellisburg, Jefferson, NY, in 1820. Ellisburg about 10 miles north of Lacona. Two sons and four daughters. (I can only trace 1 son & 1 dau.) M<10: 1, M10-15: 1, M26-44: 1 F<10: 2, F10-15:2, F26-44: 1.2
  • 1823 in Ellisburg, Jefferson, NY: Land records confused me. At first I though Jeremiah must still have been alive in the 1830's. Upon careful reading, though, this deed was dated eighteen twenty three. Thus it does not cause any problems with the findagrave entries.
  • 1826 in Jefferson, Schoharie, NY: Findagrave has a listing for a 50 year old Jeremiah Knickerbocker. The listing now includes pictures.

Cornelius probate next of kin
Cornelius' will was only 2 pages long, but was sloppy, and mentioned Dorcas, who were already dead. The executors didn't know the names and locations of all of the heirs. This resulted in a massive probate process. (The probate file is 140 pages long. The heading on this snapshot points to the location of the full file on LDS FS.) This excerpt lists siblings, nieces, and nephews.
