Knickerbockers in Eaton NY in 1820 Census
Land records show that Harmon, Peter, and Henry bought parts of John's properties during the years after the 1810 census. Thus, by the 1820 census, John had fewer sons living with him, and the 3 boys were heading their own households nearby.

Biography

  • John (Harmen's John) Knickerbocker, B1760, was born on 15 September 1760 in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT.2,3,4
  • He and Lydia Jackson were married on 9 June 1785 in Sharon, Litchfield, CT.9
  • He died on 23 January 1860 at age 99 in Cincinnatus, Cortland, NY, His tombstone in Cincinnatus (now degraded) reportedly said "in his 100th year". One brief obituary says he was 97.2,10
  • He was buried in Cincinnatus, Cortland, NY.2,10
  • John (Harmen's John) Knickerbocker, B1760, had person sources.12,12
  • 1760: This person called "Harmen's John" in grandad's will. Differentiated him from cousins also named John. (To further confuse matters, granddad "John" also had cousin named "John" who was son of Cornelius. Five John Knicks in 1 town.)
  • 1760 : See the pdf called "John Knickerbocker and Lydia Jackson" on knic.com.
  • Knic Lineage: 1. HJ / 2. Lourens / 3. John / 4. Harmen / 5. John (this person.)

  • 1761 in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT: Born 1760, per Salisbury records. (Often mis-quoted as 1766.) Less clear where he was born. Father Harmon not on tax list in Salisbury in 1760's. 1850 census says John bCT, but '55=Mass. In '80, dau Lucy said he was b. Mass.
  • 7 May 1785 in Canaan, Litchfield, CT: Stephen Pangborn and wife Thankful "of Salisbury" sell land once owned by her mother, Hendrica Hogoboom. Also, in May, a probate file mentions that Thankful Pangborn inherited land at the death of her mother, Mrs Hogoboom. (See her entries.)
  • 5 June 1785 in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT: Grandfather John re-writes his will. "Harmon's John, so-called, my grandson" gets land. Barth'w & the twins essentially disowned. (Thankful had just cashed in her inheritance, and soon moved to VT with S Pangborn, plus Barth'w and the twins)
  • He lived in Litchfield, Litchfield, CT, in 1790. 3 John Knicks in Litchfield. (p 7 & 2 on p 29). Two show 2 sons/1 dau. "Harmon's John" was probably living on inherited land, near Isaac, Solomon, etc. (The John who already had 2 daughters wound up with many girls. See Lawrence's son John.)11
  • 1795: An old Sharon CT record says Lovina Pardee married John Kernickerbacker. Wrong. Groom's full name was actually John Knickerbocker Beardslee. Well documented. See John Beardslee in this tree.
  • He lived in Sharon, Litchfield, CT, on 4 May 1799. John Knickerbacker of Sharon sells a quitclaim, giving up his rights to a parcel formerly owned by John Knickerbocker of Salisbury, deceased, which right was equally divided among the heirs of the deceased man.
  • He lived in Sharon, Litchfield, CT, in 1800. Two John Knickerbockers in Litchfield Co in 1800. This is the John with 5 sons. The other John in Salisbury had many daughters; he was the son of Lawrence. (The 3rd John from 1790 was not in Salisbury in 1800. Did he go to Vermont ?)5
  • 1802 in Eaton, Madison, NY, : The first Knickerbockers in the Eaton area was cousin Jeremiah in "Hamilton, Chenango Co" in 1802. (Madison Co was formed in 1806; Eaton split from Hamilton in 1807.) Jeremiah's property was ~1 mile from John's property.
  • October 1804: The original deed for John Knickerbocker. The purchase was made when this was Hamilton, Chenango County. It was recorded after Eaton and Madison County were created.
  • He lived in Eaton, Madison, NY, in August 1810. Census entry for John again shows 5 sons, but only 1 daughter. (Laura had already married G Peckham.) Note: Ancestry claims that John is in Lebanon, the adjacent town. Wrong. He is in Eaton. Look at the filmstrip.8
  • September 1810: No single record names John's 5 sons. However, combination of census, real estate, military, and church records connects all 5 sons to Eaton NY.
  • September 1810 in Eaton, Madison, NY: John Knickerbocker sells land in Eaton to Peter Knickerbocker and Harmon Knickerbocker. All three are of Eaton, Madison County, NY. (Book F, pg 125. A copy of the deed is attached to Peter's page.) Note that the sale was after the 1810 census.
  • November 1810: John makes a 2nd purchase. 50 acres near NW corner of Lot 52. (Thus, about 1/4 mile west of Leland Pond.) Madison Co K, p 447. Sale was done in 1810, but recorded 1815. (Recorded same day as a sale from John to Harmon.)
  • 5 September 1815: John Knickerbocker and his wife Lydia sell property to Harmon Knickerbocker. All parties are "of Eaton". (Book K, page 448.) It appears John bought 50 acres (previous transaction) then sold 15 of those acres to Harmon.
  • 1817: Harmon sells some of his land to Henry Knickerbocker "of Eaton." (See Henry.)
  • He lived in Eaton, Madison, NY, in 1820. Census shows that John has 1 living with him. (Must be Hiram.) Harmon, Henry, and Peter were living on their own properties, near their father. Harley was not nearby; he was in Potter Co PA; see his census entries. 1 daughter (Lucy) also still home.1
  • January 1829 in ..., Madison, NY: John Knickerbocker sells property to Hiram Knickerbocker. (Madison County records, Book AC, Page 385.) Thus not surprising that Hiram is a head of household in the following census.
  • He lived in Eaton, Madison, NY, in 1830. No children were with John (60-69) and Lydia (70-79). Hiram makes 1st census appearance near John and Harry. Lucy has married Albert Howard. (Also: Bartholomew's sons Stephen and John were heads of households in Eaton in 1830.)6
  • He lived in Madison, Madison, NY, in 1840. John is probably the elderly man living with H. Knickerbocker. (H is Harley; other brothers have names spelled out in their census entries.) The elderly man cannot be Harley's father in law, who died much earlier. Lydia Knickerbocker is gone.7
  • He lived in Volney, Oswego, NY, in 1850. John is living with his daughter, Lucy Howard. He says he was born in CT. (Interestingly, Lucy said "Massachusetts" in answer to the 1880 census question "where was dad born".)3
  • He lived in Cincinnatus, Cortland, NY, in 1855. John is a boarder. (Landlord: Daniel Sperry, proprietor of the Cincinnatus Hotel, which also had apartments. This is now called the Bennett Hotel.) Son Harry was still living on the farm about a mile away. John's birth listed as Massachusetts.4
  • 1894 book, long after John died. 2 different stories. #1 OK; says John b in CT. #2 appears to confuse John & his grandfather. (The grandfather John is the one who moved to CT with uncle. The elder John & his uncle Corn founded CT Knick lines.)
  • 1894: The Madison County history mentions an un-named uncle. Years later, an adopted g-g-grandaughter of John's claimed the uncle was "Henry." This has propagated, but has no basis.

Harmen Knickerbocker, B1742

M, #7171, b. 13 January 1742, d. about 1777

Parents

Family: Thankful Henrickje Hogoboom (b. about 1744, d. about 1815)

Biography

  • Harmen Knickerbocker, B1742, was born on 13 January 1742.
  • He and Thankful Henrickje Hogoboom were married about 1760.
  • He died about 1777 in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT, 1776 is the last year that Harmon paid the headcount tax in Salisbury. (We know that he died before 1885, when his father finalized his will.) (We also know that Thankful remarried before 1885.)
  • 1742 : For a detailed discussion of this line, see the report "John Knickerbocker and Lydia Jackson" on knic.com.
  • Knic Lineage: 1. HJ / 2. Lourens / 3. John / 4. Harmen (this person.)
  • Knic Generation #: 4.
  • 1770: Harmon's father was John Knickerbocker. The posting for John includes his will. The will explicitly names Harmon's 4 children (John, Bartholomew, and the twins, Rachel and Thankful.) Van Alstyne later incorrectly claimed Harmon had 6 kids.
  • 1770: Father John's will was long but incomplete. Several properties were not mentioned. These were split 9 ways (since John had 9 kids). Harmon's slice (1/9th) was further split 4 ways (1/4th of 1/9th), because Harmon had 4 children.
  • Harmen Knickerbocker, B1742, lived in Canaan, Litchfield, CT, in 1771. Harmon Knickerbocker and Thankful "his wife", shown as "of Canaan", have a real estate transaction with "Hendries Hogoboom, our honored mother". See Thankful's entry for more information.
  • He lived in Salisbury, Litchfield, CT, in 1774. Harmon paid the adult male headcount tax in Salisbury from 1774 to 1776.
  • Person [44] in Van Alstyne's numbering system. NYGBR, 1908/1909.

Peter (son of John) Knickerbocker, B17891,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

M, #7172, b. 1789, d. about 1879

Parents

Family: Hannah Bailey (b. about 1798, d. December 1869)

2 Peter Knickerbockers, Potter PA and Elba NY
In 1870, Peter H. Knickerbocker was living in Elba, NY. A different man named Peter Knickerbocker was living in Potter County, PA. These are two different people. (The pictures here are from the 1870 census. In fact, both Peter Knickerbockers also show up in census records 1840, 1850, and 1860. One Peter is always in Elba. The other is always in Potter County. ) Years ago some speculation got posted on knic.com, saying that Peter Knickerbocker from Potter County was born in Dutchess County. This has propagated all over the internet, and causes people to associate the Potter County man with Elba, NY. This is unfortunate, and clearly wrong. These are different men.

Biography

  • Peter (son of John) Knickerbocker, B1789, was born in 1789 in Litchfield, Litchfield, CT.2,4,5,7,8
  • He died about 1879 in Potter, Galeton, PA, Lucy's obit says Peter lived to 90, which places death around 1878/79. (Lucy's obit also says Peter was born in CT.) Ancestry users claim that Peter died in Potter PA, but this is doubtful. More likely to have died in Portville NY, near his daughter.8
  • He was buried in Ayers Hill, Potter, PA.8
  • Peter (son of John) Knickerbocker, B1789, had person sources.9
  • Knic Lineage: 1. HJ / 2. Lourens / 3. John / 4. Harmen / 5. John / 6. Peter (this person.)
  • 1789 : See the report "John Knickerbocker and Lydia Jackson" on knic.com.
  • Knic Generation #: 6.
  • 1790: Peter Knickerbocker born in Dutchess County NY, son of Hugh, is often confused with Peter Knickerbocker, born in CT.
  • 1790: Many Ancestry hints are based only on popularity, not on facts. The majority of trees say that the Peter in Potter Co PA was born in Dutchess County. The result is that new Ancestry users get bad hints.
  • He lived in Litchfield, Litchfield, CT, in 1790. Peter was the 2nd son of John Knickerbocker. In 1790, John and his young family were in Salisbury, CT.
  • He lived in Sharon, Litchfield, CT, in 1800. By 1800, John Knickerbocker had moved just south into Sharon CT. 5 sons (Harmon, Peter, Harry, Harley, Hiram) and 2 daughters (Laura and Lucy).6
  • He lived in Eaton, Madison, NY, in 1804. John and family moved to Eaton in 1803/1804. (Documented in Madison County history, and in land records.)
  • 1810 in Eaton, Madison, NY: The 1810 deed mentions the northeast corner of Lot 53. This means that Peter and Harmon were near today’s intersection of McQueen and Cole roads, just above the Resurrection Church, and about a quarter mile west of Leland Pond.
  • He lived in Eaton, Madison, NY, in August 1810. In the 1810 census all 5 sons are still with John, in Eaton NY.
  • September 1810 in Eaton, Madison, NY: John Knickerbocker sells land in Eaton to Peter Knickerbocker and Harmon Knickerbocker. All three are described as being of Eaton, Madison County, NY. The deed is attached. (I do not know when Peter sold his interest in this land.)
  • 1816 in Ayers Hill, Potter, PA: In 1816, brother Harley was 1st schoolteacher on Ayers Hill. (See 1878 book, via Google.) Harley m. Isaac Lyman's stepdaughter. Harley - not Peter - was the 1st Knickerbocker proven to live Potter PA. (See also 1820 census for Harley.)
  • 1817: Peter's movements around 1817 are a mystery. Was he a lumberjack moving from camp to camp? Did he travel or live with brother Harley? More research needed.
  • 1817: Peter bought & sold properties starting in 1814. I have found 5 deeds so far. Confusing. Needs more work. Example: book A, p109. When he sold land in 1817, he was called "late of Potter County". Did he leave in '17, then come back later?
  • 1818: Daughter Lucy's obituary says (1) she was the oldest, and (2) she was born in PA. Melissa must have been 2nd daughter. Melissa's LDS baptism says she was born in Madison Co. This only makes sense if Peter was still moving around.
  • About 1819 in Madison, Madison, NY: Melissa Allen joined the LDS church. Baptism shows b. Madison County, NY. Death record says father was Peter Knickerbocker. She reached adulthood and had kids in Potter County, PA.
  • He lived in Madison, Madison, NY, in 1819. Peter Knickerbocker was living in Madison County in 1819. (See daughter Melissa's birth record.)
  • He lived in Eaton, Madison, NY, in 1820. Peter was b. CT, but moved to Madison County NY with his parents. In 1820, he was living near father and brothers. This is the only Peter Knickerbocker ever recorded in Madison County, and must be Melissa's father.1
  • 1823 in Potter, Galeton, PA: See "History of Potter County", Victor L. Beebe, Potter County H. Society, 1934. This author says a contract for clearing timber went to "Harley or Peter Knickerbocker."
  • 1823 in Potter, Galeton, PA: "Early History of Coudersport" says that Peter Knickerbocker received a contract for clearing land. (The contract had been owned by Isaac Lyman, who had links to Harley.)
  • 1824 in Eulalia, Potter, PA: See the attached item. Peter sold land in 1824. Based on the neighbors, it is possible that brother Harley lived in Peter's land from circa 1816 - 1822. (Harley left Potter Co after his wife died.)
  • 1826 in PA: Potter county's Peter had a son Hiram, born in PA, whose life is well documented. (Peter H. Knickerbocker of Dutchess County / Elba also had a Hiram, b Dutchess NY. Not the same person.)
  • 1830: Peter H. Knickerbocker (the son of Hugh) was in Elba in the 1830 Peter H. Knickerbocker lived in Elba for the rest of his life and showed up in every census.
  • 1830: This "Peter Knickerbocker" does not appear in the 1830 census. Maybe he was in a logging camp somewhere? (I have searched the census records in all of the obvious towns; no sign of him.)
  • He lived in Pike, Potter, PA, in 1833. Peter Knickerbocker is called a taxpayer in Potter County in 1833. First solid evidence that Peter finally settled in Potter County. He remained in Potter County until very late in life (when he moved across the state line to Portville, NY.)
  • He lived in Pike, Potter, PA, in 1840. Peter is in Potter County census. Oldest kids are gone. 4 sons with Peter. (1 m 5 - 9, Peter Jr; 2 m 10 - 14, Oliver and Hiram; 1 m 15 - 19., Amassa). Peter and wife are 40 - 49. H Knickerbocker, John Robbins, and D Crippen are neighbors.3
  • PA, Potter, Pike. HOH = Peter Knickerbocker.
  • 1850: Four different times in his life, census takers asked Potter County's Peter where he was born. (1850, 60, 70, and 75.) Every time he said Connecticut. This is straight from the horse's mouth.
  • He lived in Pike, Potter, PA, in 1850. Potter County Peter's birthplace listed as CT. Peter (61), Hannah (51), Peter Jr (17). Lucy Robbins nearby, with her daughter Lydia. Oliver next door with son Harley.4
  • He lived in Stewardson, Potter, PA, in 1860. Potter County Peter's birthplace is shown as CT. Peter 71, Hannah 61, no kids. Daughter Lucy next door with John Robins.2
  • He lived in Stewardson, Potter, PA, in 1870. Potter County Peter's birthplace is CT. Peter (83) living with Oliver (43), next door to daughter Lucy. Oliver's son Harley is living nearby.5
  • 1875: There are 6 census sheets attached (1820,40,50,60,70,75). None of them show a middle initial. No middle initial in Madison County land records, or in Potter County histories. Thus, there is no basis for claiming to know Peter's middle initial.
  • 24 January 1875: Peter H. Knickerbocker - the man with the Dutchess County roots - died on Jan 24 1875. Probate records list date of death, name of wife & kids, etc. Meanwhile, Peter Knickerbocker of Potter County was still alive. (See the 1875 census)
  • He lived in Portville, Cattaraugus, NY, on 1 June 1875. Birthplace CT. Age 87. Living with daughter Lucy and her first husband, John Robins, in the household of a granddaughter. This is Peter's last appearance in the census.7
  • 1879: Potter County's Peter is grave 64138066. The owner recently updated the grave, to show that Peter was indeed born in CT. However, the findagrave owner still believes Peter had a link to Dutchess County. I see no basis for this claim.
  • 1900: Lucy, Peter Jr, and Amacy all said father born in CT in both 1880 + 1900 census. Also 1885 state census for Peter Jr. Oliver said NY in '80 but PA in '00. Hiram said NY in '80 and '00. Kid's vote totals: CT 7, NY 3, PA 1.
