Peter Knickerbocker of Potter County, PA was born in Connecticut. (Four times in his life, census takers asked Peter where he was born. All four times he said "Connecticut".)

There was some speculation posted on the old knic.com website that claimed Peter was born in Dutchess County, NY. This was wrong, but unfortunately this speculation is now quoted as "fact" on many genealogy sites, without being supported by a single bit of real data.
