Benjamin Knickerbocker in Yates County NY

Biography

  • Benjamin J. Knickerbocker, B1795, was born about 1795 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, NY.
  • He died about 1848 Ben was gone before 1850 census.
  • Benjamin J. Knickerbocker, B1795, had person sources.3
  • 1795 : See the report "Knickerbockers of Pine Plains NY" on knic.com
  • Knic Lineage: 1. HJ / 2. Lourens / 3. Cornelius / 4. John / 5. Benjamin (this person.)
  • Knic Generation #: 5.
  • 1795: FamilySearch has scribbled notes from Yates Co historian "Swann Vital Records". Benj in YatesCo m Mariah Hydesrot & had brother Andris in Buffalo. Caution is needed, but Swann was correct on Maria's death & daughter Francis' marriage.
  • 1795: To understand this family, start by looking at Hubbardstown, Michigan, which straddles the Iona County / Clinton County line. Maria, Mary Ann, Fanny, and Andris all wound up living near Hubbardstown. Maria & Mary Ann are in the same cemetery.
  • He lived in Wayne, Steuben, NY, in 1820. 1 male and 1 female age 16-25. Also 1 young female. The 1820 census district for "Wayne" was large. For example, today's town of Barrington, Yates Co was originally part of Wayne.2
  • 1821: NY state census records show that Walter consistently said he was born in "Yates County". (Technically not true, since Yates was first created in 1823. The Barrington area was in Steuben Co until 1826, when it was switched to Yates Co.)
  • 1821: Ben had brothers named Walter and Andris. (Susanna Pulver's father was Andris Pulver.)
  • 1823: Ontario Co split in 1823. Yates was formed (although not to its current boundaries)
  • He lived in Barrington, Yates, NY, in 1825. In the 1825 state census, Benjamin was in Barrington in Steuben Co. (Switched to Yates Co in 1826.) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS4T-6FY5?i=33&cat=515108.
  • 1826: Yates took a slice of Steuben. Wayne got smaller. Barrington became part of Yates Co.
  • He lived in Benton, Yates, NY, in 1830. 2 boys 5-9; 1 girl <5; 1 girl 10-14. Adults are 30-39. Fits Andrus' brother. (Does not fit the "Benjamin" who moved to Michigan.)1
  • He lived in Benton, Yates, NY, in 1835. FamilySearch has partial results from 1835 NY state census. Benjamin was in Benton. 3 males, 4 females. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSQ7-V9C2-3?cat=213423.
  • 1840: Martin's civil war records show his birth location as Benton, Yates Co, NY.
  • 1840: Have searched for any sign of Benjamin Knickerbocker in Yates Co census records in 1840. Even looked at all men named Ben. No sign of our Ben Knick in Yates Co. (Of course, early census records were never perfect.)
  • 1840: Yates Co land records are very well organized on FamilySearch. Zero purchases or mortgages by Knickerbockers in the early to mid 1800's. (They must all have been leasing.)
  • He lived in Yates, Orleans, NY, in 1845. In 1845, Andris attempted to clean up the probate for mother Susan. In his statement, Andris said his brother Benjamin was in Yates County, New York. Unfortunately FS does not have the Benton portion of 1845 NY state census.
