Knickerbocker Apprentices in Amenia

Biography

  • Alanson (TheBlacksmith) Knickerbocker, B1807, was born about 1807 in ..., Dutchess, NY.1,2,3,4,5,6,9,9
  • He died on 16 January 1885 in ..., Calhoun, MI.3,6
  • He was buried in Eckford, Calhoun, MI.3
  • Alanson (TheBlacksmith) Knickerbocker, B1807, lived in Farmington, Oakland, MI.6
  • Knic Lineage: 1. HJ / 2. Lourens / 3. Harmanus / 4. Lawrence / 5. Harmanus / 6. Alanson (this person.)
  • Knic Generation #: 6.
  • 1807: 2 cousins named Alanson. Grandsons of Lawrence Knick (1740-1814) who moved from Amenia to Ontario Co. Lawrence's son David (who lived in Ontario Co) apparently named a son "Alanson." So did Lawrence's son Harmanus (who had stayed in Amenia).
  • 1808: Alanson was not the son of the Harmanus Knickerbocker who fought in the war, moved to Ontario County, and then applied for a pension. (See the pension application!) Instead, Alanson probably one of the 5 sons of the mysterious third Harmanus in Amenia NY.
  • He lived in Perinton, Monroe, NY, in 1820. Alanson was an indentured servant. He ran away. His master posted multiple notices in the local paper. (Palmyra NY is a few miles east of Perinton.)
  • 1830: Lived in Canada at one point? Look at 1850 census. Son George shows birth in "C.W." Canada West?
  • 1831 in Wayne, Wayne, MI: In 1831, Alanson Knickerbocker "of Dutchess County" buys land in the Detroit area. A history of Wayne Co says that Alanson Knick was 1st blacksmith in the area.
  • He lived in Wayne, Wayne, MI, in 1836. Moved from Wayne Co to Livingston Co Michigan in 1837. Moved to Handy, Livingston Co. (His move from Wayne to Livingston was documented in history of Livingston Co. .)11
  • He lived in Howell, Livingston, MI, in June 1838. Alanson sells land to Albert. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS89-W9Y3-L?i=672&cat=213796.
  • He lived in Livingston, Berrien, MI, in October 1838. Alanson of Livingston sells property to a Calvin of Washtenaw. See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS89-W9YG-M?i=698&cat=213796 and https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS89-H6H6?i=103&cat=213796.
  • 1839 in Livingston, Berrien, MI: Alanson#1 was original settler of Handy Mich ~1837. Albert arrived by '38. Calvin arrived around '39. Marion is adjacent town, but the Alanson in Marion in 1840 may be Alanson#2 (who later moved to Illinois). Thanks to D.B.Simpson for all her postings.
  • MI, Oakland, Farmington. HOH = Alanson Knickerbocker.
  • He lived in Farmington, Oakland, MI, in 1850.1
  • September 1853 in ..., Oakland, MI: Alanson bought property in Oakland Co. Deed is at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3QW-WSRJ-C?i=119&cat=214476. 2nd Knick in Oakland deed book. (Benner was 1st.)
  • He lived in Farmington, Oakland, MI, in 1860.4
  • 1860: Alanson Knickerbocker, the indentured servant in 1820, first became indentured in Dutch Co, and apparently moved to Perinton with his boss. This Alanson is probably son of Harmanus Ye 3rd, and probably became a blacksmith.
  • 1863 in Farmington, Oakland, MI: Multiple state directories (available via Google) show Alanson Knickerbocker as a blacksmith, tool manufacturer, etc.
  • 1863 in ..., Oakland, MI: Sale: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSL6-WQ9C-D?i=682&cat=214476. Alanson & wife Maria. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3QW-CS6P-M?i=570&cat=214476
