In 1870, Peter H. Knickerbocker was living in Elba, NY. A different man named Peter Knickerbocker was living in Potter County, PA. These are two different people. (The pictures here are from the 1870 census. In fact, both Peter Knickerbockers also show up in census records 1840, 1850, and 1860. One Peter is always in Elba. The other is always in Potter County. ) Years ago some speculation got posted on knic.com, saying that Peter Knickerbocker from Potter County was born in Dutchess County. This has propagated all over the internet, and causes people to associate the Potter County man with Elba, NY. This is unfortunate, and clearly wrong. These are different men.
